Adoption

Interested in adopting a bird? Our adoption process is very thorough because we want to ensure our birds go to homes that will take care of them properly and that are ready to make a long-term commitment. If you are interested in adopting from us now or in the near future, please complete an adoption application online, and then notify us by phone that your application has been submitted. The adoption agreement is also online and available for you to see what terms must be agreed upon in order for you to adopt an APL bird. Please note we only adopt out within the state of Texas and submitting an application does not equal approval for adoption.

Before any APL bird goes to its foster or adoptive home, we require that fosters/adopters review our recommended/required reading document. There, you will find guidelines for an appropriate cage for each species of bird. If your cage/perches/accessories does not meet our expectations, we will not allow a bird to be placed in your home.

View our adoptable birds here. Please email us if you do not see a species you are interested in. We try to keep up with creating adoption ads as birds become available, but we do sometimes fall behind; we may have a bird available that does not yet have an adoption ad created.

Fostering

Interested in fostering a bird? Like our adoption process, the foster approval process is very thorough to ensure birds in our care are in safe home while they wait for their forever family to find them. Fostering is a good way to help out a bird in need without the long-term commitment. If you are interested in fostering a bird, please complete a foster application, scan it, and email it to us at aplsmallbirdrescue@yahoo.com. Hold onto the hard copy; we will need it if we allow you to foster an APL bird. If you do not have a scanner handy, there are various mobile applications (such as Genius Scan) available for free. The foster agreement is also available for you to see what terms must be agreed upon in order for you to foster an APL bird. Please note we only accept fosters within 30 miles of 78745 (South Austin, TX). Submitting an application does not equal approval for fostering.

Surrender

***We are currently unable to accept new birds into our program; please use the basic adoption application (editable) to screen adopters. Email us to receive the answer sheet, so that you may “grade” inquiries you receive.***

If you are no longer able to care for your bird(s), we are hopeful that we can help you. Due to the nature of rescue, we cannot always accept surrenders as soon as they are requested; there are often times that surrenders will be put on a “wait list” while we wait for an APL bird to be adopted to make space for a new surrender. If we do not have space, and you are unable to hold onto your bird(s) while we wait for an adoption, we encourage you to use a basic adoption application (editable) to screen adopters. Please email us to receive the answer sheet so that you may “grade” inquiries you receive.

To begin the surrender process, please complete the surrender contract online. There is a $70 surrender fee requested for each bird that APL accepts; this fee covers the bird’s veterinary exam. The surrender fee may be waived under special circumstances, or if you can provide proof that the bird has been examined and determined healthy by a capable avian veterinarian within the 6 months preceding the surrender date. If you are unable to afford the surrender fee, please email us to discuss your bird’s entry into APL’s program.
